We are based north of Albany, NY, about 4 hours from New York City and Boston. Currently Reading ROCKS and Character ROCKS travels to parts of NY, CT, MA, VT, parts of NJ and PA.

SEE BELOW for the number of shows needed depending on how far away you are. Block booking with another school is a great way to share travel costs!

It varies depending on how large your school is and how far you are from our home base north of Albany, NY.

Audience Size: We suggest no more than about 250 students per show for Reading ROCKS.

Participation is where it's at! Our goal is to give as many student volunteers a chance to "shine" onstage as possible.

Distance from our home base... Two hours away:
Minimum two shows required. (Note: Each back to back show added is significantly cheaper)

Three hours away:
Minimum three shows scheduled or three show price.

Four hours away: Overnight stay costs, two rooms, either in a hotel or private home. Consider sharing travel costs and show needs with another school: Depending on the logistics, we may present two shows in the morning at your school then present two after lunch at your partner school.

Farther Away: We find we aren't scheduling shows much more than four or five hours away nowdays because of the rising cost of travel and because of the high demand for shows in our region. Please email if you're considering combining with another school for a few days of back-to-back shows.

For Reading Rocks: We suggest no more than 250 students per show. Grouping the classes together -- such as Grades K-1-2 and 3-4-5 -- works well.

Tell us about your Back-to-Back Show Discount!

It's well worth it to schedule several shows IN THE SAME LOCATION with 10-30 minute breaks between. Your second show is less than half the cost of the first, and the third show is even less.

We can easily present four shows in one school per day.
If you can't schedule back to back shows, layovers between shows reflect the value of the artist's down time.

SAVE! Block-Booking Discount:

You may want to consider combining with a partner school to share travel costs and shows, and to really Build the Buzz for your community's Reading or Character Education Program.

Biggest savings: We pass along our cost savings to you if you combine on the same contract.

Schools are welcome to choose either Reading ROCKS or Character ROCKS shows in any combination.

Why not combine all the grades in one big audience?

For schools over a few hundred students, our experience shows putting all the grades together does not keep the students engaged as well. For a typical school, K-5, 500 students, a show for K-2 and one for grades 3-5 works great.

Our songs are authored to reflect the differences in ages and their favorite literature characters. We present different, age appropriate shows for the older and younger children.

Participation and audience size: Our shows keep the kids engaged because we invite volunteers to join us onstage and because we've written a wide variety of music to keep the shows moving.

During the shows, w
e walk among the students asking them to suggest their favorite books to read. Participation keeps kids engaged and helps them "own" the show. We've found up to 250 is the ideal audience size for the most take-away value.

For medium size schools, we suggest grouping the grades as they are developmentally so different... 4th and 5th graders aren't interested in our "Clifford" song and the younger ones don't "get" "Late Night Reading Blues."

We offer substantial Back to Back Show multiple discounts to encourage workable audience size.

Not at all. We arrive set to go with a quality PA and microphones. We just need a grounded electrical outlet nearby.

Please reserve performance space an hour before through 30 minutes after the shows for set-up and take-down. Sorry, no students or activites can be sharing the performance space while we're moving the equipment and doing the technical sound check.

First, send us an email.

We’ll get back to you within a day or two with any questions. We'll email your quote right away so you have it in writing to take to your committee.

Once we confirm the date, our Manager takes over with the paperwork.
She'll mail you our standard contract. Your school Principal simply signs and returns both copies to us in the envelope provided and we’ll send your signed copy back. Easy!

You will receive a
packet of custom publicity posters to help Build the Buzz in your community. You can download more publicity posters here.

Our manager will coordinate the paperwork and show details with you and call before the show to confirm the details and loading in times.

IMPORTANT: If you’re funding the show through BOCES, you’ll need to send the program request to BOCES right away and mail BOCES the program verification right after the shows.

Feel free to print out any of the information on this site, check our reference page and download our printable program flyer. It's probably all you need to convince your selection committee to invite us to your school.

Can we work through BOCES?

Yes, Brian and Susan's shows are New York State BOCES approved for payment.

BOCES is great source of funding.. but we all need to return BOCES paperwork on time! The school needs to send the BOCES Program Request as soon as we book the shows.

Important: Please send the BOCES Performance Verification right after the shows to assure timely payment.

To keep our costs down for everybody, including schools that pay on show date, we ask that BOCES performances are paid within 30 days of show date.

Schools use a variety of creative ways to make Reading ROCKS and Character ROCKS happen. PTO/PTA fundraising, school budgets, BOCES, business sponsorship, and specific grants to support curriculum based programming are just a few ideas. Another great idea is to present one of our popular evening Community / Family Entertainment Shows and charge a modest ticket price as a fundraiser.
